''Bittersweet World'' is the third studio album by American recording artist Ashlee Simpson. It was first released in Australia on April 19, 2008, with a release in the United States following on April 22.〔(【引用サイトリンク】 title=Ashlee Simpson : Album : Bittersweet World )〕 The project serves as her third and final release through Geffen Records. Simpson first spoke of a third album following her run as Roxie Hart in the musical ''Chicago'' in 2006. Work on the project officially began in 2007, with Geffen announcing an October release date. The album was initially titled ''Color Outside the Lines'', taken from a line in the song "Rule Breaker". Simpson claimed in November of 2007 that she had finished the album, though she continued to write new material.
Simpson took more creative control over the project, co-writing all eleven songs on the standard edition of the album. Hoping to create a "fun party album", Simpson enlisted producers Timbaland and Chad Hugo and Kenna of The Neptunes among others to create a more "beat-oriented" sound that differed from her previous pop-rock releases. The album incorporates elements of pop and dance-pop music, and was influenced by the pop-music scene of the 1980s. ''Bittersweet World'' lyrically speaks of relationships and life in the public eye, among other topics. The album was released to a generally positive reception from music critics, many of whom praised her musical transition to a more pop driven sound.
The album debuted at number 4 on the ''Billboard'' 200 chart in the United States, with estimated first week sales of 47,000 copies. It became her first album to not reach the top of the chart, as well as her lowest first week sales thus far. The album went on to sell 126,000 copies by 2009, her least successful effort to date.〔http://blogs.reuters.com/world-wrap/2009/04/08/jessica-simpsons-country-foray-is-over/〕 The album's lead single, "Outta My Head (Ay Ya Ya)", became her first to not appear on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100 chart in the United States, though it was a moderate success in other territories. Shortly following the release of "Little Miss Obsessive" as the second single, Simpson announced her pregnancy, thus promotion for the album concluded. Simpson embarked on a thirteen date club tour to promote "Outta My Head (Ay Ya Ya)", where she performed songs from the album. The album was further promoted through various televised performances and interviews.
== Background ==
In November 2006, after completing her run as Roxie Hart in the musical ''Chicago'', Simpson said that she was going to meet with record executives soon and begin working on her third album.〔("For The Record: Quick News On Michael Jackson, Beyonce, Chris Brown, Ashlee, Cure, Clipse, Nicky Hilton & More" ), MTV News, November 15, 2006.〕 Geffen chairman Ron Fair said in early December 2006 that working on Simpson's next album would be "very tricky" because of press scrutiny and "prejudices", but that Geffen would work with her to overcome that, "because she deserves to be heard and she deserves a shot."〔("For The Record: Quick News On Gwen, Good Charlotte, Christina, Katharine McPhee, Ashlee, Rihanna & More" ), MTV News, December 6, 2006.〕 MTV reported on March 6, 2007 that Simpson's next album would have "a more soulful sound", and Simpson said she was writing with many different people.〔("For The Record: Quick News On Mariah, Jennifer Hudson, Jay-Z, Ashlee, K-Fed, Lily Allen, Chili Peppers & More" ), MTV News, March 6, 2007.〕 On March 22, 2007, EW.com reported that her father and manager Joe Simpson revealed she had been writing with Kenna and Chad Hugo. She also was said to be working with Timbaland, Linda Perry, Pharrell Williams, will.i.am, John Legend, and Tim Rice-Oxley. It was reported at that Simpson was working on a collaboration with The Cure's frontman, Robert Smith,〔Leah Greenblatt, ("Ashlee Finds the Cure?" ), EW.com, March 22, 2007.〕 although in July Smith said that he had not worked with her and did not think it was likely that he would do so in 2007; he did, however, give a positive appraisal of Simpson's 2006 performance in ''Chicago''.〔("Jessica Simpson Says Ashlee Is A Thriftier Shopper; Plus 50 Cent, Kelly Clarkson, Ne-Yo, Lindsay Lohan & More, In For The Record" ), MTV News, July 20, 2007.〕 In September, Simpson said that, although it would be "a dream" to work with Smith, it had never happened and she had been embarrassed by the rumor.〔("SIMPSON 'EMBARRASSED' BY ROBERT SMITH RUMOUR" ), Contactmusic.com, September 20, 2007.〕
